Ubuntu 12.10 Rails install

Developer libs

mysql, rmagic, curl, git, vim, sqlite, nodejs nokogiri...

$ sudo apt-get install aptitude libxslt-dev libxml2-dev imagemagick libmagickwand-dev libsqlite3-dev libcurl3-dev curl beanstalkd git git-gui vim-gnome mysql-server libqt4-dev mysql-client libmysql-ruby libmysqlclient-dev mysql-workbench ctags icedtea-plugin nodejs rar wmctrl

Ruby

ruby 1.9.3

$ sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.3

Rails

$ sudo gem install rails

It's not recommended to install ruby and rails as sudo. It will be better to use some ruby/gem manager(rvm or rbenv).

You are right in some point. It is up to developer. I used rvm before and have a lot of troubles. It will be nice to see as simple tutorial as my by installing rails through rvm or rbenv.
