Save your image as 32x32 size (not 16X16) and convert to .ico format.
Browsers will automatically resize the favicon to 16x16.
Browsers that support retina display will serve high quality version of favicon.
Browsers/devices that do not support retina display will serve favicon as normal (lower) resolution.
