Set your Terminal window to be slightly transparent

This tip effectively allows you to get another layer of windows so that you can reference materials underneath while typing into vi/vim like this:

Go to Preferences > Settings Tab > Window > Background > Color & Effect settings to set it. I have mine set to 80% opacity, see what works for you.
