If you're using LESS (or SASS/STYLUS) for your project, check out semantic.gs. It's a grid layout system that lets you quickly create any kind of grid you want, fixed or responsive, and avoids the use of layout-specific classes in your markup.

It was made by Tyler Tate of 1KB Grid fame, so give it a look at least.
