Insert Common Technical Symbols on Mac

With Mac's Character Viewer, it's easy to insert common technical symbols into most any document or application.

  • from the Keyboard Preferences pane, enable "Show Keyboard & Character viewers in menu bar"
  • show the Character Viewer from the menu bar icon
  • for each symbol below

    • search for the Hex code
    • select the character
    • from the right pane, click add to favorites

    ⌘ – ⌘ – the Command Key symbol

    ⌥ – ⌥ – the Option Key symbol

    ⇧ – ⇧ – the Shift Key symbol

    ⎋ – ⎋ – the ESC Key symbol

    ⇪ – ⇪ – the Capslock symbol

    ⏎ – ⏎ – the Return symbol

    ⌫ – ⌫ – the Delete / Backspace symbol

Now, to insert any of these

  • open the Character Viewer from the menu bar
  • go to your Favorites
  • double click the character (it will show up in your current document/application)
