Reindexing the drive on Mac OS X
If Spotlight stops working and Finder starts arranging content weirdly, the solution is to kill Spotlight storage and trigger reindexing, in Terminal:
sudo mdutil -i on /rm -rf /.Spotlight*sudo mdutil -E /
