State the obvious

Do it early. Do it often.

Obvious is different for different people. Too many times I've said something that i thought was obvious only to be hailed as a visionary. And I've lost count of the times I've been amazed by deep insights that were elementary to others.

Even if all you do is find that everyone agrees on the basics, you've got somewhere to start.
