Always use drush to manage a Drupal site

it's easier (... never as root though)

In the projects root directory:

Type 'drush' to list all commands, or
Type 'drush --filter=sql'

Drush is available in some Linux distros repositories, but can be installed using pear as well. Instructions: http://drupal.org/project/drush
