Move window buttons to the left using GNOME on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail

Not quite a coding tip, but might be useful anyway, since for me at least it was not quite obvious.

First, make sure you have dconf-editor, or install from repositories if needed

Then, navigate to org → gnome → shell → overrides, and set button-layout to close: or close, minimize:

... whatever it's on the left side of the colon will be on the left corner of the window title, and whatever's on the right will be on the right corner

In my Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial xerus, the option was at: org -> gnome -> desktop -> wm -> preferences
Kudos on explaining about the colon issue, I changed from appmenu:close to close:appmenu and it moved to the left as I wanted.
