Typing tricks on OSX

You may not be a big fan of Emacs, but it has plenty of useful shortcuts that can make you much faster at typing. What's even more exciting, every text input in Mac OSX supports them.

Let's practice the magic now! Put some text into the comments field, and press ^A (control + A). You will notice that cursor jumped to the beginning of the line. ^E does the opposite - cursor will be moved to the end. Few extra commands for text navigation:

  • ^F - forward
  • ^B - backward
  • ^N - next line
  • ^P - previous line

And my favorites: ^H - backspace and ^D - delete. They let me to keep my fingers on the "home row" and fix typos without reaching to backspace, which is so far away.

You might argue that reaching for control key is a bit tricky. Yes, it is. That's why I highly recommend mapping caps lock to control. It is very easy to do: System Preferences - Keyboard - Modifier Keys...
