Protocol Buffers, 32-bit unsigned integers, and Java

Here's a blog post I wrote a few years ago about how to translate 32-bit unsigned integers from Protocol Buffers' "fixed32" type. This is particularly useful when you have some form of IPC between C++ and Java.
