Noob lesson 1) Always back up original source files.

I work for a small, but reputable non-profit in their IT department. Part of my responsibilities are to make back end modifications to our DNN site. I replaced a back end developer with significantly more experience than me. Thank God he is still around to help my noob butt.

We purchased a third party emergency notifications module to install on our site. Management wanted to me make some modifications to the module to make it more user friendly and not so techie. Not sure what I was doing, I stumbled forward.

I modified one the ascx files so that the module would not request users email and cellphone information. I was proud that I was able to make these mods. Then came time to apply the changes to the website.

I jammed the new ascx and .dll back into the original zip folder and tried to re-install the module. Lets just say I sat at my desk for an hour wondering how in the hell I broke the newly purchased module and how I was going to fix it. Thankfully, I was able to email "Ted" and explain what I had done. Although I broke that instance of the module, I had stored backups on our network. Lesson learned, always back up originals, and ask for help when you are a noob.
