I use :tab sp to quickly maximize. When I close the tab, I'm back in my old preserved view.

I used to do this, but then I decided to nnoremap ; :
It seems silly, but once you try it for a bit, you won't know how you lived without it!

Tabular's awesome if you plan on doing this a lot, but I figured this was a good example of using bash filters, and may come in handy if you don't have tabular installed on whatever box you're on.
